One of the pleasures of having your own space is the enjoyment of providing luxury bedding for your sleeping arrangements. Luxury bedding means different things to different people, but at the very least it means having something special to sleep on. It doesn’t even have to be expensive. Luxury bedding can simply be a texture, color or style you enjoy.

Some people consider the feel of silk sheets to be the ultimate in luxury. The natural fiber against the skin gives a sensation of elegance like no other. Silk sheets as a item of luxury bedding needs about the same level of care you provide your silk blouses and scarves. It’s definitely not something to throw in the regular cycle of the washing machine with hot water.

Silk sheet sets come in a variety of colors and weights and are often sold as part of complete bedding set including sheets, comforter, pillow cases, shams and perhaps even a dust ruffle. Other silk sheet sets are more tailored in appearance, relying on color and feel to set the tone of the luxury bedding.

Other people choose luxury bedding of Egyptian cotton in Italian designed linens. The heavy cotton sometimes relies on woven patterns in the fabric to add texture and richness. These may take the form of stripes of regular and satiny texture in a white on white pattern for example. The warmth and durability of the quality Egyptian cotton means you can have luxury that wears well and can stand laundering without special handling.

At a minimum luxury bedding will have a high thread count. Ordinary bedding will have a thread count of 180 to 200. Luxury bedding might have a thread count of over 1200. Obviously the higher the thread count, the more luxurious the look and feel of the sheets.

Luxury bedding for many people is satin sheets, They claim to sleep better because when turning or moving on these sheets, they don’t pull at the clothing and skin as some of the regular bedding does. The drawback to some satin sheets is that they require more care when laundering than do cotton bedding.

Part of the enjoyment of luxury bedding is the wide range of colors available now. You can find bedding sets in almost any color you can imagine from neon to white and with flowers, stripes or solid colors. Theme bedding is available if you want a bit of whimsy with your luxury.

Learning To Appreciate Art Quilts

I have been mulling over the question of how one learns to appreciate art, fabric art in particular, and how to educate the public about art quilts.

First of all, art quilts as an art form is a relatively new concept in the art world. Textile art has existed a long time in the form of woven tapestries or sewn garments. Quilts have also existed a long time and have even been decorated with embroidery even as they were used as bedspreads on beds for warmth. Some garments were quilted and used under armor and other outerwear to keep people warm.

Traditional American quilts flourished in the 1800s and were mostly used for practical purposes although they were very artfully hand sewn and embroidered. A lot of women made quilts for their trousseaus and also telling family histories such as births, marriages and deaths. Still, they were mostly treasured as family heirlooms handed down for several generations. Today, museums and private collectors pay huge sums for antique bed quilts so in that sense, they are now art.

The modern art quilts (to be hung on the wall) evolved in the early 70s, through the 80s and the 90s. Many women were interested in their grandmother's quilts or quilts their mothers made for them and had learned sewing and hand embroidery since they were young, but wanted to find new ways of expressing their creativity using fabrics of all kinds. The notion came that maybe we could make quilts that would strictly be for decorative purposes to be displayed on the walls in homes, hotel lobbies, offices, restaurants and other public spaces.

There was a lot of experimentation taking place at this time using traditional cutting or sewing techniques and designs in new expanded ways where blocks were not all the same but different. Some artists even used blocks of different sizes to be sewn together in creative ways. Many started coloring, dyeing and printing their own fabrics which then were cut up in various ways and reassembled to form a new graphic image. Some used one piece of fabric and embellished it with more fabric sewn directly onto the top, either appliqued by hand or machine. Some added colorful hand stitching as part of the design.

Sewing techniques became innovative also because of new sewing machine technology where lots of machine stitching and embroidery became part of the overall design, not just used to quilt two layers of fabric and the batting together. This trend continues today with many fabric artists using free motion (random stitching) to highlight areas of design or even be an intricate part of the graphics.

Also as the interest grew in sewing and new fabrics came on the market, new kinds of threads emerged on the scene. Metallic threads in all colors meant that some very interesting effects could be achieved by machine quilting in specific areas. All kinds of threads came along with different kinds of qualities that could be used in creative ways.

The latest trend is the renewed interest in yarns of all kinds which many fabric artists like to incorporate onto the surface of their art quilts. Specialty yarns of all kinds and colors can add exciting textures to the designs. Additional embellishments used nowadays are beads, ribbons, trinkets and even new kinds of fibers. Some artists are even incorporating materials and techniques from other artforms.

So how are these wall quilts art? They are art because they're original visions manifested in various ways using fabrics much in the same way as an artist would use brushes. They are art because they express high levels of creativity of images never before seen. They are art because of the innovations in techniques they represent. And they bring tremendous amounts of beauty to our often denatured, sterile and concrete-filled asphalt jungle environment.

I remember a few years ago when I saw my first real art quilts displayed at a local center where I frequently went for meetings. It was a private display of three very large art quilts depicting various scenes inspired by the Holy Writings of the Baha'i Faith. I literally stopped in my tracks when I entered the room! The atmosphere and energy were totally changed just because of those beautiful works of art. I will never forget that moment and I am sure that is one of the reasons I decided that I wanted to create something similar.

So, how do you learn to appreciate this new art form? Go to quilt exhibits, local and national, as often as you can. Almost all traditional quilt exhibits now include some form of art quilts as a special category. Prizes are given and artists are given recognition. Many have written books about the techniques they've invented or perhaps they've come up with a variation of a cutting technique. Find quilting programs on your local TV network or cable, many now devote one or two programs per week to fabric art.

In general, read art books that you find in the local library. Go to museums and regular art exhibits. Take art classes and art appreciation classes to get a good basic background about art in general. Then you will begin to appreciate the work involved and the time it takes to create an art quilt.

Southwestern décor echoes serenity and simplicity. This

There are different kinds of picnic blankets available today to suit a wide choice and budget. So whether it is just the two of you or the whole family, there is a variety available. Choosing the right one is important so that you do not feel upset if they are inadequate and put a damper on your picnic.

The first thing to look for when you choose your picnic blanket is the size. One that is too large may not be necessary for just two people. Also it can be too bulky to carry around and take up space that you can use for something else, especially if you are going hiking. Creative Ways to Decorate Your Walls

Moving into a new house can sometimes cause a quandry. You can stand and stare at large... blank spaces for weeks wondering just what to do with them. These blank spaces are the walls of your new house or apartment.

Most people have a hard time figuring out what to do with their walls, because their thoughts are limited to just paint and pictures. There's actually quite a bit more you can do to decorate your walls though, and here are a few of my favorite tips:

1. Create shadow boxes. These are especially nice to do as remembrances of loved ones who are no longer with us. If you want to create a shadow box for grandparents for instance, but you don't have anything handed down from them that could easily be used in this decoration, try visiting around to yard sales and flea markets. Find items that fit the timeframe of your grandparent's lives, or that remind you of them fondly. Use these items in your shadow boxes, then display them in a nice area of your home to symbolize both the love you had for them, and the legacy they left behind.

2. If you love blankets or quilts, there are some very unique ways to decorate your walls with these. Simply attach pieces of wood to your wall, drill holes in them, and put dowel rods in the holes. On these rods you can hang your quilts or blankets just like you can on a regular quilt rack, except this way they decorate your walls. Placing the items just above a sofa is a great way to keep blankets nearby when you watch movies or snuggle up next to the fire. Also, if you enjoy quilting or sewing, you may want to use a similar structure on the wall to hold bolts of fabric for your creations. The walls look lovely, and you're also organizing your home!

3. Here are just a few other ideas: You can use old windows and some curtains to make a faux window in a room without enough windows. Your can use old picture frames to "frame" an oil painting or collage or quotations. Using small vases, you can have fresh flowers hanging on your wall. You could also make part of your wall into corkboard or a set of box frames so that you can display your children's artwork.

So there you have multiple, easy, and inexpensive ways to uniquely decorate your walls!

The History Of Rugs

The history of rugs is quite amazing. The weaving of rugs and
carpets dates back to at least 500 BC. Rugs are made by weaving,
at least this is how they started making rugs. Weaving is
nothing new, our ancestors have been doing it for thousands of
years. The first weaving that was done was to make baskets. They
made baskets out of anything that was pliable, leaves, grass,
twigs and whatever materials could be found at the time.

The most common material used for rugs back then was most
likely goat and sheep hair. Later on the Chinese produced wool
piles. Some of the first Chinese rugs and carpets were made out
of cotton and wool backings.

Some of the first looms were made with two branches that looked
like a fork and connected by a crosspiece. The binding threads
were then flattened with a bar usually made of wood. They later
learned to dye the threads with various natural colors from
fruit, vegetables, animals and bugs.

In 1769 a machine was invented by a Richard Arkwright. The
machine was designed to spin thread onto a bobbin. Not too many
years later a machine was designed to spin a thousand threads at
a time. Eventually it progressed to where we are at today.

An archaeologist in the 1950's found a rug that dated back to
500 BC or before. It was found in a frozen state in Siberia. It
was a knotted rug of Turkish descent. This just goes to show you
that rugs are by no means something new. Our ancestors have been
using them since the beginning of time.

Before people ever started weaving hunters would use the animal
hides they got off of their prey to make clothing, rugs, maps
and other various things. Today rugs are mass produced by
machines and most people have forgotten the history behind rugs.

Quilting has been an expression of American women over the past hundred years. Quilts are being reappraised by historians, art critics and a growing public as a form and expression of American folk art. The creativity of generations of women in America is gaining recognition for their handmade quilts. Quilts are no longer stored in closets and trunks. Happily quilts are finding their way back into our lives and homes. Many quilts can also be found on the walls of galleries and museums in the world. Quilts have come to be a amazing design tradition which has developed in the United States, since colonial times.

By the mid-eighteenth century there were three major distinct English needlework styles used in quilts which had found their way to America. First there was the appliqué covers, pieced patchwork (stitched shapes) and quilted whole cloth coverings.

By the 1770’s a religious revival movement called The Great Awakening was offering a more generous and loving picture of God. This was important in the story of quilting because it transferred the responsibility for moral and religious education directly from the clergymen to the women in the home. Women established an environment where training would be offered to America’s future citizens. The nineteenth century encouraged the creation of a well-ordered and comfortable domestic setting.

This developing domestic way of life was the chief reason for the development of needlework and quilting as occupations for women. By the 1800’s it was considered necessary and proper for a young woman to do needlework in order become a better homemaker and companion.

Following the Revolutionary War and again following the War of 1812 the American market was flooded with manufactured items. These included fabrics. It became family traditions for neighborhoods to gather for functions – these were often composed of women – needlework and quilting were take the shape of becoming what is known today as quilting bees.

Quilting took a social and involvement of complete family for weddings and births. Husbands and brides-to-be drew complex patterns on a quilt top or cut out templates from which patterns were cut. Grandmothers and children threaded needles and cut out patterns, while mothers sewed pieces together and quilted the top. A quilt represented the creative efforts of an entire family.

The manufacture of cotton was America’s first national industry. It became a well-applauded talent to make something ornate out of a basket of old scraps, and the creation of a unique quilt symbolized womanhood.

The developing middle classes with a network of women’s sewing circles, often associated with churches, became a reform. Quilts were made to memorialize historic causes. Together with continuing tradition of bees, quilting, get-togethers, fairs, and auctions, handmade quilts were the new social acceptance.

Selecting Quilting Fabrics Using a Color Wheel

Choosing colors to use in your quilt is another opportunity to observe the similarities that the craft has with "fixer-upper" projects undertaken by do it yourselfers. In this case, quilters can use a tool that has been employed by painters and decorators for many years; the color wheel.

What is the color wheel?
The color wheel is a circle-shaped piece of equipment that depicts several different colors that the quilter or painter can choose from. These wheels are printed on many different types of surfaces; in fabric shops there may be wheels made from solid wood or even metal; they are very durable and can withstand numerous touches and spins from all the people that handle it. Paper color wheels are less durable and are meant for personal use.

Some color wheels have more colors on them than others, but all color wheels will include the primary colors; red, yellow, and blue. These colors will be separated by an equal amount of spaces. The spaces in between the primary colors are the colors formed by mixing varying amounts of each color together; secondary colors )orange, blue, and violet) are located halfway between each primary color combination, as they are the result of mixing equal parts of each color.

The color wheel as a quilting tool
In any quilt there are going to be sections that draw the eye and stand out, even if the quilt uses only one color (monochromatic). Monochromatic quilts can use shades and tints to make particular pieces stand out, highlight, or recede.

As the most dominant of the pure colors, yellow is placed at the top of the wheel. The dominance of the colors is also determined by the amount of gray added to each color. Along the right side of the color wheel are the warmer colors. These colors will naturally draw the eye to where they are placed on a quilt, while the cooler colors on the left will complement and help to highlight dominant colors in a quilt with a multi-color scheme. Warm colors can even mean that darker patches on the quilt will recede, due to the natural progression of the eye.

The best use of your color wheel in your pattern will happen after you determine the type of quilt you want to make. Monochromatic quilts are the easiest; one color means that all you are dealing with are shades and tints, none of which are depicted on the color wheel. A color wheel is not really needed when it comes to these designs.

On the other hand, a color wheel is pretty important when it comes to analogous or complementary quilts (unless of course you are naturally gifted at color determination!). Complementary quilts utilize colors that lie directly opposite each other on the wheel; an example is a primary color with the secondary color created by mixing the other primaries. These colors can be used most effectively as borders.

Analogous quilts use colors that are located beside each other on the wheel. They create a natural blending, as each one has a color in common with the one beside it. The color wheel in this case is crucial in determining which colors are analogous with each other.

There is a lot of confusion when it comes to using a color wheel. It is simply a tool that makes choosing different patterns and color schemes easier for the individual quilter. Using one does not mean that you have to go out and buy a whole bunch of new fabric, and it certainly does not mean that you have to dye your own fabrics in order to use it. Instead, just think of a color wheel as a way to cut a lot of guesswork and time out of the process so that you can jump straight into the quilting without fear of the final work appearing out of synch.

How To Create Stained Glass Quilts

One of the joys of quilting is being able to spend your craft time doing various styles or types of quilts. You may have noticed that stained glass quilts are growing in popularity. These look complex to create but following some simple guidelines will have you mastering this part of quilting in no time!

You will need to select your pattern for the project. It is best to actually use a pattern that is specifically for stained glass quilts for beginners. There are many different types and colors of fabrics to select from when making stained glass quilts. It is best to use fabrics that do not have fine details and patterns within them since you want the finished product to look like a piece of stained glass. Many people find that Muslin fabrics work well for the foundation fabric.

Once you’ve selected the pattern, increase the design size by 150% on a copier. Position the stained glass pattern in the middle of a 10" x 8" piece of woven fusible interfacing. It is best to avoid the fusible web because it can tend to make your project too stiff. Trace just the design without the numbers onto the fusible area of the interfacing.

Get a large piece of wax or freezer paper that will fit the design. Trace the design onto the paper, again without numbers. Using sharp scissors, you will need to cut the design out following the lines you just traced onto the paper.

Place all the appropriate freezer paper pieces on the different color fabrics. Make sure to place with the shiny side of the paper down. Iron the sections onto the fabric. Make sure your iron does not burn the fabrics. You will then need to cut the design pieces out leaving a 1/16" additional edge border around each piece. Don’t cut the pieces flush or you will not have enough lead fabric and overlay fabric.

Now that all your pieces are cut, you will need to remove the paper backing. Place the patches on the fusible area of the interfacing. You will want to use the traced out lines for positioning. Partly overlie the appliqué sections a little. You do not want to leave any openings to have better looking stained glass quilts. Once this is complete, you will use a pressing sheet to iron the appliqué sections to the interfacing. Make sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions when doing this part of the process for this part of your stained glass quilts.

Set the pieces out and pin them onto the foundation fabric. It is recommended to baste around these so that the pieces will not shift when you sew on the bias tape later. You will now to stitch down the edges with bias tape so that the edges of the bias tape are completely covered with the other sections that are laid down. You will want to use thread that matches the bias tape. Use the backstitch to lock the starting and ending portions of the bias tape. Be certain to trim the thread ends close to the surface for a neater appearance on your stained glass quilts.

You are almost completed with your project. Cut away the extra foundation fabric and continue to add the other pieces. A nice addition is to add additional bias to the border pieces. With stained glass quilts, you will have leading at any area the glass is a different color or piece. It is important to quilt on both areas for the bias leading in order to make the leading extra noticeable.

During the home building boom that followed the end of the war, the use of wall to wall carpeting became very wide spread. False braids, unlike what the name implies, are true braids with the cloth wrapped around one or two center cores. The type of construction makes false braiding very strong and durable.

To achieve the desired shape, the braiding process must be very consistent. The braids for hearts and rounds must be sewn together evenly so that the rug will lay flat. A cheaply made braided rug may curl or pucker, especially after cleaning. When you are shopping for any shape or size of braided rug, always check the integrity of the stitching. If the stitching seems loose or is not uniformly spaced, you may consider looking for a braided of higher quality.

Braided runners can be made so the braids run parallel to each other then wrapped at the corners. Again, the way the rug is sewn will determine how long it lasts.
